My love of fabric art began as something else entirely. I use to make and sell pet accessories from repurposed materials. A custom furniture store hosted a venue for artisans to sell their crafts, and while there, I told one of the employees how I used unwanted materials for my accessories. He ended up giving me an enormous amount of upholstery fabric samples that were destined for the trash.
When I started going through some of the samples, I realized how beautiful they were, but some of them were not appropriate for pet accessories. That’s when I realized that I could use fabric for collage, just as easily as paper. While I no longer make pet accessories, these upholstery samples have found their way onto many canvases and are also used to make many of my journals. I also use a lot of patterned fabrics, as well as clothing with embroidery or floral patterns and lace.
